I like flowers more than foliage, but most
of the plants recommended for shade are
foliage plants. Do I have any good options
for flowering plants?
Sure. Among blooming, shade-loving annuals, the easiest
are impatiens and begonia,
r ig h t.
Perennials that bloom
in shade include astilbe, Virginia bluebells, columbine,
foxglove (a biennial), and bleeding heart.
Can I plant sun perennials and
annuals in a shady spot?
Not if you expect the plants to look their best. In shade,
sun-loving plants won’t bloom much, and they’ll become
spindly and small or even die. It’s better to pick true
shade-loving plants for low-light locations.
